Ancient Greece Gender Roles
Gender equality is not something the Ancient Greeks believed in. What the Greeks believed was the fact that men were more superior than women, and that only men should be able to become citizens and be able to vote. They also believed that men should show their manliness and prove their worth to be able to earn a spot in government or something else. On the other hand when it came to women, the women were expected to do nothing, but to have certain qualities, such as working in the house, on the farm, and more qualities that went along with the class they were classified is. The Greeks also had a special way of how to resemble men and women in paint. The Greeks would get vases and some men and women would paint asto what it means to be a certain gender, and if the painting was about a man then the paint would be black, and if the painting was what it meant to be a women then the painting would be in the color white. Also another thing about the gender roles in Ancient Greece was that when boys are at school reading, writing, and learning new things, the girls or women are at home learning how to run a household from their mothers, when the children become older than the men go off to military training and in that time girls are married to their husband with dowrey. This means that your father along with you sends many other things, such as slaves and more. Women are always required to marry men older than them because all the men their size are learning warfare and more so they aren’t allowed marrying until they are near their 30’s. Finally the largest thing that differentiated men and women which was absolutely unfair for the women was that women had basically no rights and the rule was that the men ruled over the women and that women were not allowed to buy or sell anything nor own a property. One of the largest things however was the fact that women could not complain about anything or anyone nor could they take anyone to court. Overall I just can’t believe as to how unjust the Ancient Greeks were when it came to gender roles in Ancient Greece.
Ancient Greece Gender Roles Compared to Ancient Rome's
Wow, after I researched these two civilizations and gender roles within their civilizations and cities I was surprised as to how much the gender roles in Ancient Rome and Greece were alike. One major similarity that I found was obvious was that in both Ancient Rome and Greece the women were not given much freedom and had no political rights whatsoever. Another similarity I found was that also women were not known for much other than managing their household and children. A third similarity I found was that in both Ancient Rome and Greece there were many girls that were married with dowry, which today in Canada is against the law. One of the rare differences that I was able to dig out was that in Rome women were actually allowed to own property and in Ancient Greece women had no rights over property or much money, which I think is very unjust. Overall I think that you can easily see as to how both of these civilization were so unjust to women in Ancient times.
