Gender Roles in Ancient Rome
Well in Ancient Rome gender roles, were quite fascinating because the importance of women was given when they were abducted and unfortunately raped, which was remembered as an event called the rape of Sabine Women. After this the women were able to stop a war between Rome and the men who had abducted them. After this the importance of women was still just looking after the household, but this also led to the fact that women were known for linking families which was a very good thing. Women were still able to do some things such as handicrafts, but this was needed to still be done at their house. Women were also allowed to own property, but they were not allowed controlling their own property. Also women were not allowed to speak in public assemblies and were not allowed having a public life, meaning they were not allowed to have many friends and hang out with them. This meaning that basically their whole life was just handling the house and taking care of their children, they were not allowed to be more than housewives. Isn’t that a shame. When women were not allowed doing much men had a lot of freedom such as being able to be in the government, vote, and they were allowed being a citizen. Although most women in Ancient Rome never did much. There were some women that were actually huge influences in Roman culture. Overall I think that all women and men should be equal and it for sure was not shown in Ancient Rome.
Gender Roles Comparison Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece
Wow, after I researched these two civilizations and gender roles within their civilizations and cities I was surprised as to how much the gender roles in Ancient Rome and Greece were alike. One major similarity that I found was obvious was that in both Ancient Rome and Greece the women were not given much freedom and had no political rights whatsoever. Another similarity I found was that also women were not known for much other than managing their household and children. A third similarity I found was that in both Ancient Rome and Greece there were many girls that were married with dowry, which today in Canada is against the law. One of the rare differences that I was able to dig out was that in Rome women were actually allowed to own property and in Ancient Greece women had no rights over property or much money, which I think is very unjust. Overall I think that you can easily see as to how both of these civilization were so unjust to women in Ancient times.
